Ljubljana

Ljubljana

We arrived at our hostel, Celica, after another day of coach travelling, which I mainly slept through. It’s a gift for me but not for Eleanor…at least she got some peace and quiet. The hostel is a converted prison and one of the most hipster places that we’ve stayed in. After some confusion with our beds we had our first look around the city.
It is beautiful, quirky and feels a little bit halloween american city, think the beginning setting of Hocus Pocus when Max is cycling through the Autumnal leaves of Salem! More importantly we’ve discovered that Ljubljana has multiple vegan options! We ate dinner at Organic Garden, discovered by a chance walk by, followed by a relaxing evening after our day of travelling.

Day 1

Staying at hostels so far has been pleasant. However this morning we were awoken by a large group of unorganised Americans who could not decide if they were going to Vienna, a tour of Ljubljana or going for breakfast. After what seemed like an hour (it probably was) they left.
First we stopped by an organic milk dispenser (go with me) which produces fresh un-pasterised milk 24 hours a day…mainly for the novelty but it was delicious! Second, Eleanor’s choice to go up the funicular towards the castle and a walk around its grounds. We had a great overview of the city where we watched part of the marathon taking place.

Up until today we’ve been lucky with the weather however today in Ljubljana torrential rain poured across the city. The afternoon definitely called for an indoor activity. Two years ago over a drink with Sue she tried to explain to me how a picture of her and her friend showed Sue standing along the same line as her friend but with Sue appearing twice as tall. Needless to say I couldn’t comprehend how it worked so a trip to the Museum of Illusion to see the room in practice was a must. Eureka, I now understand it! The Museum of Illusion had multiple mind boggling rooms and tricks including head on a plate and the vortex tunnel: a room with a bridge across but the walls circling and spinning around. The whole room felt like it was spinning resulting in us both hanging on to the sides of the bridge.

Tomorrow the plan is to catch a bus to Lake Bled and eat Bled cake!

Day 2

We were up bright and early to watch Doctor Who, I did not want to read any spoilers on the internet beforehand! Then we set off to see Lake Bled. My shoes that I usually wear were a bit damp from yesterday’s rain so I took an older pair. It was later that I found out they had two tiny holes in the bottom of them which soaked up today’s heavier torrential rain like a sponge. We, got, DRENCHED! But at least it was a good opportunity to use my ultra-cool TARDIS poncho…
Around Lake Bled we ate some famous Bled cake and Eleanor had a hot chocolate, which turned out to be liquid chocolate and not the sort the British are usually used to. This evening we will pack ready for Venice, hoping the rain will not follow us.
